My household has been reducing our environmental impact by doing regular composting. Composted food waste can be used as a way to enrich soil as well as create natural gas when distributed to larger scale composting facilities. It also keeps food waste down in landfills. According to the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources website, food waste contributes to around 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and 58 million metric tons of methane a year. They also report that food waste accounts for 25 percent of landfill space and 2 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the United States alone. On an individual level, this site highly encourages household composting practices and investigating technology to help you do so.
While our neighborhood does have compost collection bins, we use the Lomi Food Recycler for our household needs. While this doesn't aid in the natural gas production that sending it to composting facilities might provide, we are still helping prevent taking up even more landfill space. Additionally, we use the compost for tending to a home garden, which both reduces the amount of vegetables we need to purchase from stores and allows us to add plantlife and oxygen to our local environment.
