Reducing waste one latte at a time
I'm an avid coffee drinker and I used to spend so much money on lattes. I drink them so often that I started to feel bad about the money I was spending on them. My final straw was when it dawned on me that these frequent purchases were SO bad for the planet. Not only is the coffee industry itself a bit problematic, but every drink was in a plastic cup. I felt like the best way to make an impact on both problems was to start making my lattes at home so I bought an espresso machine! However this introduced a new kind of waste, every latte I drink has a minimum of two espresso shots. And since my machine operated off of pod that meant that for every espresso shot I poured there was a plastic pod that came from it. For this project I decided to counteract this waste, because I was throwing out tens of these single use pods. I bought a reusable lid that will work to eliminate this excess plastic I was producing. This will reduce my plastic waste by so much because by the end of every week I found myself throwing out 10-12 of these pods. Additionally I use my favorite cup every to make my lattes, which has made an appearance or two in class!
