My household has been reducing our environmental impact by doing regular composting. Composted food waste can be used as a way to enrich soil as well as create natural gas when distributed to larger scale composting facilities. It also keeps food waste down in landfills. According to the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources website, food waste contributes to around 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and 58 million metric tons of methane a year. They also report that food waste accounts for 25 percent of landfill space and 2 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the United States alone. On an individual level, this site highly encourages household composting practices and investigating technology to help you do so.
